What Are Thinking Traps? Series: Part One

“What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

I am a huge fan of exploring ‘inner space’ — that space between our ears where real internal life unfolds. We spend lifetimes seeking to understand and to share our thoughts, dreams, ideas, fears and loves with others.

No two people are exactly alike. We are unique in our creation, our beliefs, histories, and points of view. Some of us are optimists. Some are not. Yet, we seem to share some patterns of thinking in common.

We all recognize the need for clear thinking. Most of us want to believe that’s what we practice – most of the time. The Bible tells us that as we think in our hearts – we are.

I am an optimist. That’s not to say that I live in a dreamland, or don’t clearly see reality. I do see the negatives … but I realize that they are not the whole picture. ‘Good stuff’ still exists too – and often side-by-side with the not-so-good.

It’s been said (and I agree) that… “The difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is how you use them.” – Unknown.

As a fan of ‘inner space’ and as an optimist who strives for clear thinking … I’ve been studying some thought patterns which can fool us by interfering with (or distorting) our perspective. If there are difficulties we share in common, I want to know about them (forewarned is forearmed), and I’d like to have some ideas of what I can do about them.

I’ll be exploring some of these ideas in the next several posts. I hope you’ll join me.

Charlie Chaplin explained: “You’ll never find a rainbow if you’re looking down.”   May I encourage you to keep looking up.

Blessings, Love, and Laughter to you,

Margaret
